History & significance

A Shiva temple on the Vaigai bank northwest of Madurai, founded under the Pandyas with its present masonry raised in the Nayak period, and hymned by Sambandar among the Paadal Petra Sthalams.

Sthala katha — the legend

In Sambandar's contest with the Jains, his palm-leaf hymn floated upstream against the Vaigai and landed here, giving Thiruvedagam its name.
