Built around the eighty-four-step stepwell that Guru Amar Das sank in 1551, after which he moved the Sikh centre from Khadur to Goindwal on becoming Guru. The shrine carries a large fluted dome with a gold pinnacle, four cupolas and frescoes illustrating the Guru's life, and pilgrims recite the Japji Sahib at each of the baoli's steps.
Tradition tells of a trader named Goinda who could not found a settlement here because of local superstition, until Amar Das, through his service and devotion, cleared the obstacle and the village was established.
