The tutelary goddess temple of Hassan, which takes its name from her, built by the local chieftain Sanjeeva Krishnappa Nayaka in Hoysala times; it is opened only once a year around Deepavali, a ghee lamp left burning inside for the months it stays shut.
Seven Matrikas are said to have travelled from Varanasi and stayed on for the beauty of the place, three of them — Maheshwari, Kaumari and Vaishnavi — dwelling in the anthills within the temple.
