A Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified in the Tevaram, begun under the Pallavas, enlarged by the Cholas and rebuilt in the 16th century under the Nayaks. Its 10th- and 11th-century inscriptions and its link to the Battle of Takkolam give it particular historical weight.
The region is said to have been swamped by floodwaters that rose to Shiva's waist, and Parvati embraced him in fear as the waters came.
