The temple from which Sivakasi takes its name, a Shiva shrine with a three-tiered gopuram in Virudhunagar district. It is held to have been built by the Pandya ruler Harikesari Parakkirama Pandian in the 16th century and was extended later by the Madurai Nayaks.

A Pandya king is said to have carried a lingam home from Kasi, and where the cow bearing it halted and would not move he understood Shiva's wish and set the lingam down.
