History & significance

Capital of the Vatsa mahajanapada on the Yamuna and a canonical Buddhist centre: the Buddha visited repeatedly and stayed at four monasteries here, including the Ghositarama, and a famous schism among the monks took place at the city. Occupied from roughly the twelfth century BCE to about 600 CE, its fortifications and palace were built in six phases, and Ashoka raised a pillar here whose edict is addressed to the officials of Kausambi.
