History & significance

A hill temple rising in three tiers over Piranmalai, sung by Sambandar among the Paadal Petra Sthalams; the Marudu brothers of Sivaganga were among its later patrons.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Piranmalai itself is said to be a block of Mount Meru blown off during the contest between the serpent king Adisesha and the wind god Vayu.
