History & significance

One of the five Pancharama Kshetras, begun in 892 CE and finished by 922 under the Chalukya king Bhima, with later work by the Kakatiyas and the Musunuri Nayaks between 1340 and 1466. It holds a sixteen-foot limestone linga and a hundred-pillared mandapam, and is a centrally protected monument of national importance; inscriptions from 1147 to 1494 record its gifts and endowments.
