History & significance

A hill temple near Guntur patronised by the Vijayanagara rulers, with an inscription recording a visit by Krishnadevaraya. Its eleven-storey gopuram, about 153 feet high, was raised by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu of Amaravathi and is among the tallest in south India.

Sthala katha — the legend

Tradition holds that the shrine was discovered by Yudhishthira, eldest of the Pandava brothers.
