The last of the six war-camp abodes of Murugan, set in dense hill forest north of Madurai, with subsidiary shrines to Ganesha and to Murugan's consorts Valli and Deivanai.
The Kanda Puranam relates that Murugan withdrew as a hermit after the fruit of knowledge was awarded to his brother Ganesha, and that when the poet Avvaiyar came to him he shook a naaval tree to offer her its fruit, giving the place its name.
