Third and most-visited of Murugan's six abodes (Arupadai Veedu), crowning a 140 m hill reached by steps, elephant path, or winch. The idol is held by tradition to be made of navapashanam — nine poisonous minerals blended by the siddha Bogar into a healing amalgam; the abhisheka panchamritam is a GI-tagged prasadam.
Sage Narada offered a fruit of supreme wisdom to Shiva; Ganesha won it by circling his parents, while Murugan raced around the world. Furious, the boy renounced all and stood here as an ascetic with a staff — his parents consoled him: 'You yourself are the fruit' (Pazham nee), giving Palani its name.
Palani bus stand is about 1 km from the temple and Palani railway station about 2 km; the nearest airport is Coimbatore International, roughly 114 km away. The shrine stands on Sivagiri hill: pilgrims either walk the stepped elephant path, which has benches, restrooms and drinking water, or take the winch-and-rope car, which runs 7.00 am to 12.30 pm and 1.30 to 5.00 pm, and from 4.00 am on festival days.
