History & significance

An archetype of Kerala temple architecture — multi-shrined, mural-painted, encircled by the Thekkinkadu maidan where the Thrissur Pooram, Kerala's grandest festival of caparisoned elephants and percussion, unfolds each May. The linga is invisible beneath a mound of centuries of ghee abhishekam that never spoils.

Sthala katha — the legend

Held in tradition to be the first temple consecrated by Parashurama after he raised Kerala from the sea with a throw of his axe; Shiva appeared to him here beneath a banyan as the northern lord — Vadakkum-nathan.

Reaching there

Thrissur has its own railway station, one of the larger stops in Kerala, with a second station at Poonkunnam to the north. NH47 passes Mannuthy about 6 km from the city and carries both KSRTC and private buses; the nearest airport is Cochin International at Nedumbassery, roughly 50 km away.
