History & significance

A Shiva shrine of the Paadal Petra Sthalam canon near Chidambaram, revered in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns of the Nayanmars. Its lord bears the name 'the milk-hued one'.

Sthala katha — the legend

A king's horse is said to have split the lingam with its hoof, and the wound was healed by milk poured by the celestial cow Kamadhenu.
