History & significance

One of the 108 Divya Desams and counted among the three oldest Vishnu temples of Kanchipuram, built by the Pallavas with Chola and Vijayanagara additions. It is celebrated for its unusually large seated image of Krishna as the Pandavas' envoy, and is hymned in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham.

Sthala katha — the legend

Krishna, serving as the Pandavas' peace envoy, is said to have revealed his colossal cosmic form here when Duryodhana tried to trap him in a pit.
