History & significance

A Paadal Petra Sthalam mentioned in the 7th-century Tevaram canon, originally raised by the Cholas with the present masonry structure built under the 16th-century Nayaks. Sivapuram village near Kumbakonam is known chiefly for this shrine.

Sthala katha — the legend

Tradition holds that Surya, Chandra, Brahma and Vishnu in his boar form all worshipped the deity at this site.
