History & significance

One of the four cardinal mathas of the Advaita Vedanta tradition, on the bank of the Tunga, traditionally founded by Adi Shankara though its documented record begins in the 14th century. Vijayanagara rulers became its patrons after 1336 and financed the Vidyashankara temple completed in 1338, and its 12th acharya Vidyaranya advised the empire's founders; it has directed Smarta religious life across south India for six centuries.

Sthala katha — the legend

Adi Shankara is said to have chosen the spot after seeing a cobra spread its hood to shade a pregnant frog from the sun.
