A Shiva temple attributed to the Pandya ruler Varaguna Pandiyan II in the 9th century, with inscriptions of 885 CE from the Chola period and a further record of a donation by a feudatory's queen in 911 CE under Parantaka I. It has a single prakaram and a two-tiered vimana but no gopuram, six daily services, and a bangle festival in the month of Thai as its chief celebration.
Shiva is said to have appeared here of his own accord as a lingam to grant the Chola queen Kanthimathi a safe delivery.
