History & significance

Regarded as the sixth of the Tevara sthalams of the Pandya country and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, with royal patronage running from the early Cholas and Pandyas to the Sethupathis and Marudu Pandiyars.

At Mahalakshmi's request, Shiva is said to have revealed his Gowri Thandavam cosmic dance to her at this shrine.
