A Paadal Petra Sthalam of the Tevaram canon, counted third in the series of shrines on the northern bank of the Kaveri. The temple fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in the early twentieth century.

The boy-saint Sambandar, travelling to his own wedding, is said to have been miraculously fed here and praised Shiva as Uchinathar.
