One of the eight Veeratta shrines of Shiva, marking his destruction of the three demon cities; here the Pallava king Mahendravarman I embraced Saivism, and the saint Appar returned to the faith and attained salvation. Its seven-tiered gopuram carries early Bharatanatyam sculpture.
