A twin-shrined Divya Desam holding Vatapatrasayi, attested from the 8th century, alongside Andal, whose 14th-century shrine and towering 192-foot rajagopuram were raised under Vijayanagara kings. It is revered as the birthplace of the Alvars Periyalvar and his foster-daughter Andal.
Andal is said to have been found as a baby beneath a tulasi plant and to have secretly worn the temple garlands before they were offered - a practice the deity himself endorsed in a dream.
