History & significance

A Shiva temple at Avittathur in Thrissur district, counted among the sixty-four ancient Brahmin settlements of Kerala and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Avittathur inscription of AD 1024 records grants of paddy land for its upkeep under the Cheras.

Sthala katha — the legend

The lingam is traditionally said to have been installed by Parashurama, with the sage Agastya laying out the temple and fixing its daily rites.
