Dated by its own inscription to 778, Kalasan was raised as the Tarabhavanam, a holy building for the goddess Tara, together with a monastery, after a Sailendra preceptor persuaded Maharaja Panangkaran to found it. The shrine is cross-shaped, a twelve-cornered polygon with octagonal roof stages, and is among the oldest Buddhist candi on the Prambanan plain; despite Dutch-era repairs it is now in poor condition and less well kept than its famous neighbours.
