History & significance

The oldest of the three aligned temples that include Pawon and Borobudur, built early in the ninth century under King Indra of the Sailendra dynasty; the Karangtengah inscription of 824 mentions the founding of a sacred building called the bamboo forest, generally identified with it. Its chamber holds three large stone images, the Dhyani Buddha Vairocana flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. Found in ruins in 1836, it was restored between 1897 and 1925 and inscribed with the Borobudur Temple Compounds as a World Heritage Site in 1991; women still pray before its relief of Hariti, protector of children, when hoping for a child.
