History & significance

An 11th-century temple at Unkal in Hubballi built by Bommanna Dandanayaka in the Kalyana Chalukya period, laid out on a square cross plan of the sandhara type described in the Sanskrit architectural texts. Now a monument of national importance under the Archaeological Survey of India, it carries sculpture drawn from Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakta traditions.
