Five rock-cut caves on a granite outcrop that King Valagamba converted into a monastery in the first century BCE, gilded and filled with some seventy Buddha images by Nissanka Malla in 1190, and painted under the Kandyan king Kirti Sri Rajasinha in the 18th century. Inscribed by UNESCO in 1991, it is the best-preserved ancient monastic complex in Sri Lanka and remains in use.
Local tradition credits Vishnu with creating the caves by divine power, and holds that the water dripping in the second cave has healing power.
