The largest temple at the fort town of Gingee, raised around 1540-1550 by Muthyala Nayaka in full Vijayanagara idiom. Its ornamental pillars were dismantled by the French garrison in 1761 and further sculpture was carried off in 1860, so the ruin also documents the colonial dispersal of South Indian temple fabric.
