History & significance

The Divya Desam of Thirukandiyur near Thiruvaiyaru, praised by Thirumangai Alvar and one of the few temples housing images of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma in one premises.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Shiva, burdened by the sin of severing Brahma's fifth head, is said to have been freed of it after worshipping Vishnu and bathing in the temple tank here.
