Built over the house where Guru Nanak was born to Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, making it among the holiest Sikh shrines. A first gurdwara was raised in the sixteenth century by the Guru's grandson Baba Dharam Chand and the present structure was commissioned by Ranjit Singh in 1819–20; the site was the scene of the Nankana massacre of 20 February 1921, in which 86 Sikhs were killed, and is now managed by the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee.
