History & significance

One of the 108 celebrated Shiva temples of Kerala, which under Chera rule served as the central temple for the administration of the surrounding eighteen tiers; besides the Parvati shrine it holds eleven subsidiary deities. Its sculpture was damaged during Tipu Sultan's invasion of Kerala and stayed so for about two centuries.

Sthala katha — the legend

Tradition credits the sage Parashurama with installing the Shiva image on the south bank of the Nila.
