History & significance

Known as the Ketu Sthalam, this is the Navagraha temple of Tamil Nadu tied to the shadow planet Ketu, about two kilometres from Poompuhar in Mayiladuthurai district. A flat rajagopuram and two prakarams enclose the Nayak-period masonry raised over a Chola foundation.

Sthala katha — the legend

After the churning of the ocean of milk loosed the poison Halahala, the serpent Vasuki is said to have prayed here and Shiva appeared as Naganathar to grant redemption.
