History & significance

One of Sikkim's oldest and most senior Nyingma monasteries, begun as a small lhakhang by Lama Lhatsun Chempo in 1647 and enlarged under the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal in 1705. Reserved for monks of pure lineage, its head lama held the privilege of anointing the Chogyals of Sikkim; the three-storey building has been repaired after the earthquakes of 1913 and 1960.
