History & significance

A Nyingma monastery founded in West Sikkim in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chenpo Phunshok Rigzing and expanded in 1717 under the third Chogyal. Regarded as the spiritual centre of Sikkim, it keeps 41 chortens and stones carved with mantras.

Sthala katha — the legend

A vase of holy water consecrated by Guru Padmasambhava is said to be kept here, and at the yearly Bhumchu festival the change in its water level is read as an omen for Sikkim's coming year.
