History & significance

India's only major temple remembered by its sculptor's name — Ramappa — inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. Kakatiya engineering at its peak: a sandbox foundation to absorb earthquakes, basalt dancer-brackets polished like mirrors, and roof bricks so porous they float on water.

Sthala katha — the legend

The temple's dance sculptures are said to have codified poses later compiled in Jayapa Senani's Nritta Ratnavali — the walls are a frozen dance manual of the Perini Shivatandavam, the Kakatiya warriors' dance revived in modern Telangana from these very carvings.

Reaching there

Telangana Tourism puts the temple about 70 km from Warangal, which is the nearest major railway station; from there it is a bus or hired cab out to Palampet. The nearest airport is Hyderabad, roughly 150 km away, with the rest of the journey by road.
