History & significance

Built in 1874 southwest of Mandalay Hill on the site of King Mindon's provisional palace, this Theravada pagoda commemorates his brother Prince Kanaung Mintha and three other princes killed in the Myingun rebellion of 1866, whose graves lie within. Its shrine houses a huge iron Buddha image cast by King Bodawpaya in 1802 and brought here from Amarapura.
