History & significance

The great Vishnu temple of Kumbakonam and one of the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams, its central shrine shaped as a celestial chariot; the structure grew under the Cholas and was expanded through the Vijayanagara and Nayak eras.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Lakshmi is said to have emerged as Komalavalli from the Potramarai tank, and Vishnu to have descended as Aravamudhan to wed her.
