History & significance

The royal sanctuary of Taleju Bhawani, tutelary goddess of the Malla kings, built by Mahendra Malla in 1564 within Hanuman Dhoka at Kathmandu Durbar Square. It opens to lay devotees only once a year during Dashain, and among its treasures was a seventeenth-century ceremonial necklace now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
