History & significance

One of the oldest temples of Kozhikode, built in the fourteenth century by the Zamorin and closely bound to his court; its two-storeyed sanctum is shaped like a chariot. Damaged during Tipu Sultan's eighteenth-century invasion, it was renovated in 1964.

Sthala katha — the legend

The linga in the sanctum is said to have been installed by Parasurama at the close of the Dvapara Yuga.
