An old pilgrimage centre in Malappuram district with inscriptions of the Later Chera ruler Goda Ravi Varma of the tenth century and mentions in fifteenth-century texts; its two-storeyed shrine is built in the apsidal gajaprishta form. It served as a military camp during fourteenth-century conflicts and was later tied to the Kingdom of Tanur.
Shiva is said to have burst from the linga here to save the boy sage Markandeya from Yama, and is worshipped in that form as Kalasamhara Murti.
