King Mandhata is said to have received a linga from Shiva at Kailasa, which fixed itself into this hill; when Parvati sent Bhadrakali and her hosts to reclaim it, a fifteen-day struggle with the king's ascetics ended with the linga splitting and the deities merging into it.
