A red-sandstone Shiva temple built by Chola rulers at Nedungadu in Karaikal district. Excavations in 1948 recovered 14th-century bronze sculptures from the site.
The village's name is said to come from the goddess Nedunthuyar Theertha Nayaki, consort of Tantondreeswara, whose name means the one who ended the people's long sorrow.
