History & significance

The Divya Desam of Thirukkoyilur, where Vishnu stands as the Trivikrama who strode the three worlds; its granite structure took shape under Virarajendra Chola, and its 59-metre gopuram is the third tallest temple tower in Tamil Nadu.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Here Vamana the dwarf is said to have begged three paces of land from king Mahabali and grown to measure the universe.
