An early 10th-century Chola foundation on the Tamraparni in Tirunelveli district, credited to Rajaraja Chola I and rated among the finest surviving examples of Chola temple architecture. Its sculpture, including Chandesanugrahamurti and an Ardhanarishvara on the vimana, was singled out by the historian K. A. Nilakanta Sastri as unsurpassed workmanship.
