History & significance

An 11th-century Vishnu temple of the Chalukyas of Kalyani, thoroughly renovated under the Vijayanagara empire, so that its inner mantapa, garuda stambha and gopura represent three successive building traditions. An inscription of c. 1539 records a gift to the temple in the reign of Achyuta Deva Raya.

Sthala katha — the legend

The Kannada poet Kumara Vyasa is said to have composed his Mahabharata at a particular pillar in this temple, inspired by the deity.
