A Divya Desam whose origins are placed in the late 8th-century Pallava period, though most scholars attribute the major surviving structures to 14th-century Vijayanagara kings. The deity is venerated as a divine healer, and the temple tank is the largest among the Divya Desams.
The sage Salihotra is said to have offered his only meal to Vishnu, who had come disguised as a guest and remained here to bless him, marrying Lakshmi at this spot.
