One of the older Shiva temples of the Coimbatore region, credited to Chola kings and reckoned over 1,300 years old, with a self-manifested linga and a second linga in the sanctum. It is administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Sundaramurthy Nayanar is said to have been fed here by an old couple who then revealed themselves as Shiva and Parvati; because the god offered virundhu, a feast, he is called Virundeeswarar.
