History & significance

A Shakta pitha on a rocky hill in North Guwahati, built in brick between 1714 and 1744 under the Ahom king Siva Singha with Tarun Duwarah Barphukan overseeing the work. Its sanctum lies underground inside a natural cave, and the shrine, recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India, is held locally to be second in sanctity only to Kamakhya.

Sthala katha — the legend

A limb of Sati is said to have fallen here after Vishnu's discus scattered her body, and the sage Markandeya is remembered as having won Durga's blessing through penance at the spot.
