A brick Shiva shrine raised in 1694 on the Brahmaputra river island at Guwahati by order of the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha, standing on a site that also preserves traces of an earlier post-Gupta stone temple. Badly damaged in the 1897 Assam earthquake, it was rebuilt afterwards by a local merchant.
Shiva is said to have burnt Kamadeva to ashes here for disturbing his meditation, which is why the hillock is called Bhasmachala.
