Believed to have been built by the Cholas in the 9th century with patronage from Aditya I through Rajaraja I, this is one of the 275 shrines glorified in the 7th-century Tevaram. Palaeolithic tools and megalithic remains found nearby give the site a prehistoric dimension as well.
Vishnu is said to have worshipped Shiva here after losing his Sudarshana discus, winning the boon that a visit to this temple counts as a visit to a thousand.
