History & significance

A Thenpennai-bank shrine of Viluppuram district revered in the Tevaram of Sambandar and Sundarar, its Chola core recorded in inscriptions of Rajaraja I, Kulothunga I and Rajendra III before a 16th-century rebuilding.

Sthala katha — the legend

The sage who overheard Shiva's secret teaching to Parvati was cursed and, reborn as Vyasa, is said to have won redemption by worshipping here.
